Frequently Asked Questions:

Virtual Colonography

Open MRI, MRI, Fairfield County

What is virtual colongraphy?

Virtual colonography is an alternative to traditional colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer. It is a method used to detect lesions and polyps in the colon. Virtual colonography relies on advanced CT scanners for imaging and sophisticated imaging techniques to generate a 3-dimensional reconstruction of the colon, which is evaluated by our radiologists. Virtual colonography is a noninvasive, painless exam that is performed in a number of situations where traditional colonoscopy is contraindicated. It is also an excellent alternative for those who do not want to undergo a traditional colonoscopy.

How do I prepare for virtual colonography?

A 24-hour preparation is required to cleanse the bowel of stool and excess fluid. You will be given detailed instructions to prepare for the exam, which includes a prescription from your referring physician for MoviPrep to help clean the colon. Patients need to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment to complete paper work.

How long does a virtual colonography last and what can I expect?

Patients are brought into the CT exam room. At the start of the virtual colonography a small tube is inserted into the rectum to fill the colon with air. This may cause mild discomfort or cramping in the lower abdominal area. The CT exam is performed with the patient lying comfortably. The entire procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. Since no sedation is required, patients can leave immediately afterwards. There is no recovery or observation period following the exam and patients can resume their daily activities.

Patients should discuss virtual colonography with their referring physician.

Is the virtual colonography screening exam safe?

Our CT scan equipment produces a very low dose of radiation exposure with negligible adverse effects. It is not much different than the exposure from "background environmental radiation" from the sun, air travel, television, or computer screens.

Do I need a referral (prescription) to have a virtual colonography screening exam?

Yes, your doctor must provide a referral (prescription) for you to have a CT colonography exam at Norwalk Radiology. In addition, most insurance carries or HMOs require precertification. Please discuss this with your referring physician and insurance carrier/HMO prior to your scheduled appointment.

When will I know the results of my exam?

A detailed written report of the procedure will be sent to the referring physician within 24 hours. Your physician will contact you to discuss the results. Urgent results are telephoned immediately to your doctor who will discuss the results with you.
