Cyst aspiration, or fine-needle aspiration, is a biopsy procedure that uses a thin needle to draw fluid from a breast abnormality. The procedure is most often performed to drain a benign fluid-filled cyst and is done with local anesthetic. Once drained, the skin in that area should return to being flat and smooth.
Although most cysts are benign, all extracted fluid is sent to a pathologist at Norwalk Hospital for examination and to verify that the fluid does not contain suspicious cells. Should the area turn out to be a solid mass or the fluid suspicious, an additional biopsy may be recommended.
